18 Mock Seam
This consists of a thread inserted all the way down the back of the leg of a seamless stocking to give the impression that it has been made in a flat piece like the fully-fashioned article which has its two edges joined subsequently by a seam. It may be done on the seamless machine as the stocking is being knitted or a seam of thread may be rapidly inserted at a subsequent operation. Both the mock fashionings and the mock seam have a very definite usefulness as they indicate the centre line of the stocking to the launderer who is thus able to keep them straight. Without this mock seam, it is often difficult to prevent twisting or corkscrewing of the hose. -
